US Open Qualifying Set Monday at Alpine CC; Strong Field Should Attract Gallery

A strong field of 79 players will tee it up Monday at Alpine Country Club in a beginning attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open. Those who pass this local qualifying will advance to a sectional qualifying and the final U.S. Open field will be determined by the sectional qualifyings. The tournament is open to the public without a gallery fee.
Zac Blair, Utah’s top amatuer player, is exempt from local qualifying and will be playing at the sectional qualifying in San Francisco, California. However, his dad, Jimmy Blair, is in the local qualifying at Alpine and hopes to join his son in San Francisco. Jimmy will be teeing off at 10:10 with Dusty Fielding and Johnathon Ward. Fielding has been playing very well on Golfworld’s National Pro Golf Tour (NPGT) in Florida and nearly won the last event. Fielding hails from Richfield.
The top pairing of the day is at 8:40 a.m. with Tony Finau, Clay Ogden, and Tom King. Finau recently won back-to-back titles on Golfworld’s NPG Tour in and is obviously playing very well. Clay Ogden is a past United States Golf Association Public Links champion and Utah Open champion and is also playing on the NPGT.
Another strong pairing is at 9:30 with two of Utah’s top professionals Matt Baird and Steve Schneiter paired with former State Am champion Dan Horner.
At 11:50 there is the interesting pairing of Mason Casper and Todd Miller. Casper is the grandson of Billy Casper and is playing outstanding golf at Utah Valley University. Todd is the son of Johnny Miller and is the assistant golf coach at BYU.  Cody McManus of Phoenix, Arizona is also paired with them.
