Women’s Golf Finishes Strong At Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Play wrapped up at the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational on Friday afternoon, as the SUU women’s golf team finished in third place at their home event.
As a unit, the Thunderbirds shot a 20-over 596 over the two days of competition, finishing at 299 on the first day and 297 on the second at Sunbrook Golf Course.
Freshman Poy Prasurtwong led the way for SUU, finishing the two-round event at three-over. Prasurtwong shot 74 on Friday to bring her two-day total to 147. She finished 12th on the leaderboard.
Senior Taylor Viquelia was just one shot behind her teammate, finishing the event at four-over. Viquelia finished with a 148 (69, 79), which put her in 13th place.
Miranda Reyes had the best round for the Thunderbirds on Friday, shooting a 71 that propelled her into a tie for 16th. Reyes finished with a 150 (79, 71).
Kyla Smith finished in a tie for 30th, shooting a 154 (81, 73) over the two days. Nicole Jones finished in a tie for 40th, shooting a 157 (78, 79).
Three other Thunderbirds played as individuals, with Lindsay Wood shooting 165 (84, 81), Ashley Stubbs shooting 167 (86, 81) and Katie Wills shooting 180 (89, 91).
“It’s always a great challenge for our team to compete against such talented teams at our home event,” SUU head coach Richard Church said. “I’m proud of the way our players performed and the steps they continue to make in the right direction.”
Two different golfers were able to ace a par-three in St. George. Bianca Pagdanganan from Gonzaga and Delaney Elliott from Montana State both had a hole in one during the course of competition.
South Dakota State shot back-to-back 282’s to finish the event 12-under as a team and claim the title. They were followed by Gonzaga (577) and Southern Utah (596). Wyoming (601) and North Dakota State (602) rounded out the top-five.
Pagdanganan from Gonzaga finished on top of the leaderboard, shooting a 61 on Friday to finish 14-under. She finished with a birdie, a hole in one and another birdie on the final three holes to secure a new course record.
The Thunderbirds will be back in competition mode on April 6th, when they will compete in the 2017 Cowgirl Classic in Arizona.
