Utah Men’s Golf Inks Three to NLI

By Dameon Myers, U of U Associate Director of Communications

SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah head golf coach Garrett Clegg announced Wednesday that three golfers have signed National Letters-of-Intent to play golf for the Utes beginning in the fall of 2017. Joining the squad will be Andrew Crockett, Tristan Mandur and Blake Tomlinson.

“I am extremely excited about all of our players in the 2017 class,” said Clegg. “All three will come into the program ready to compete for spots in the line-up.”

ANDREW CROCKETT
Fayetteville, Ga.
Starr's Mill High School

Crockett lettered all four years at Starr's Mill High School, where he played as the No. 1 golfer on this team throughout his prep career. He was the school's career leader in under-par scoring average and posted the school's all-time record in that category.

Crockett was a 5A individual region champion as a freshman and the 5A individual runner-up in the state tournament last year as a junior. He helped lead his team to a pair of regional championships both his freshman and junior seasons.

Crockett is the son of T. Andrew and Mindy Crockett. He has one brother, Charlie, and two sisters, Caroline and Grace. Crockett plans to major in business after enrolling at the U.

“Andrew's father is a Ute grad and even though he has a Georgia zip code he comes from a proud line of Utes,” said Clegg. “We are thrilled to have him join our golf program. Andrew is a young man that has his best golf in front of him. He has competed with and against some of the best players in the country and is ready to bring his game to Salt Lake City, while making an immediate impact in our program.”

TRISTAN MANDUR
Mill Bay, British Columbia
Shawnigan Lake School

Mandur will play for the Utes following a four-year prep career at Shawnigan Lake School, where he played under head coach David Hyde-Lay. He notched a pair of first-place individual performances (2014, 2015) to go along with another pair of second-place finishes (2013, 2016) at the BC “AA” High School Provincials. This past year he helped lead Shawinigan Lake to a third-place finish as a team in the event. He ranked second overall in a field of 66 players with nine birdies through the two-round event.

This past summer Mandur registered a third-place finish at the Junior America's Cup and took first-place at the BC Junior Boys' Championship, where he carded a four-round score of 70-71-70-68=279. He also managed to collect a pair of third-place finishes at the Canadian Juniors in 2014 and 2015.

Mandur is the son of Tracy and Tibor Mandur. He has one sister, Ashley. Mandur plans to major in business management after enrolling at the U.

“Tristan is our most travelled player in our group of signees,” said Clegg. “He has had tremendous success throughout Canada and the US. He is a great athlete and has a drive to succeed that will serve him well in our program. Tristan has also had phenomenal finishes in extremely elite junior golf tournaments in both Canada and the US.”

BLAKE TOMLINSON
Salt Lake City, Utah
Skyline High School

Tomlinson was a four-year letterwinner at Skyline High School, where he went on to become a three-time all-state golfer. He posted a fifth-place finish as a sophomore (2014) and a fourth-place finish as a junior (2015) before winning the state championship outright as a senior this past October. Tomlinson registered a 68.0 scoring average throughout his prep career with the Eagles.

Outside of high school, Tomlinson registered first-place finishes this past year at the Swire Cup, UJGA Tournament Players Championship, Lynn Summerhays Jr. Championship, IMG Junior World Qualifying Championship and the UJGA Challenge Cup. Tomlinson won the Salt Lake City Open this past August, carding a 64-65=129 over the two-round event. The score of 129 is figured to be the lowest all-time score in the tournament since the event switched from match play to medal play in the early 1970's.

Tomlinson is the son of Sean and Annette Tomlinson. He has one sister, Laurel. Tomlinson plans to major in finance/business after enrolling at the U.

“Blake is a Salt Lake native that has made huge steps to be one of the top players in Utah Junior Golf,” said Clegg. “You can see from his resume that he has won a number of times this past summer and when you look at his record, his golf game has improved every year.”
