By: Bryson Lester, Assistant Director of Strategic Communications

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The Thunderbird women’s golf team opened their spring season strong on Monday afternoon, as they lead the Battle at Boulder Creek and have three players amongst the top of the leaderboard.

As a team the T-Birds shot 593 (306, 287) with one round still to be played on Tuesday. The 287 the Thunderbirds shot in the second round on Monday is the lowest combined round the team has shot in the history of the program. It is also the first sub-par round the team has completed in the history of the program.

The +17 SUU shot puts them 10 strokes ahead of the next closest team, which is Northern Colorado.

SUU’s Taylor Viquelia is in the top position on the leaderboard after the first two rounds, shooting an even 144 on the day. The reigning Big Sky Conference Player of the Year shot a 74 in the first round and a 70 in the second round to lead all other competitors.

Poy Prasurtwong sits in second overall and second for SUU after shooting a three-over 147 through two rounds. She started the day with a 75, and followed it up with an improved 72.

Kyla Smith started the day with a 79, but bounced back really strong in the second to score a 70 and finish with a five-over 149. Her 70 in the second round was the lowest round she’s had as a Thunderbird, which was good enough to put her in a tie for third.

Miranda Reyes shot a 155 (78, 77) to round out SUU’s team scoring. Nicole Jones wasn’t far behind her, shooting a 157 (82, 75) to finish fifth for the Thunderbirds.

SUU has three individuals competing in Nevada, with Katie Wills, Lindsay Wood and Ashley Stubbs shooting 161, 168 and 170 respectively.

The third and final round of the Battle at Boulder Creek will be played on Tuesday.
