Utah Finishes Eighth at Pacific Coast Amateur

EUGENE, OR, August 4 â€“ Spencer Levin proved heâ€™s human and suddenly the 38th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at Eugene CC is a horse race.

On a day when scores went low at the venerable layout (which was redesigned in 1967 by Robert Trent Jones, Sr.) the 20-year-old Levin could manage â€œonlyâ€ an even-par 71, and is tied for the halfway lead with Michael Putnam of University Place, WA, both with 36- hole scores of 5-under-par 137.

A dozen other golfers are within four shots of the leaders. Just one stroke behind are a trio that includes two Australians -- Andrew Porker, who deadlocked Levin for the first round lead but could manage only 72 today, and 2004 Australian Amateur champion Andrew Martin -- along with Erik Olsen of Newcastle, WA, who posted his second consecutive 69 today. Porker slipped to a 72 today, while Martin posted a 4-under-par 67.

Craig Doell of Victoria, BC, and Joe Lanza of Bainbridge Island, WA, each fired 6-under-par 65s (low rounds of the tournament so far) and share sixth place with 36-hole scores of 139, 3-under-par. The 32-year- old Doell, who finished third in this event last year, is the low mid-amateur (age 25 or older) and one of just three in the top 12. He and the 21-year-old Lanza each posted six birdies against a single bogey.

Putnamâ€™s score wasnâ€™t even needed for his Washington State GA Morse Cup team, which used Lanzaâ€™s 65 and a 68 from David Ferry to rally and win the annual competition for the first time. With the best two of three scores each day counting for the team total, Washington State posted 274 for the two rounds, three in front of first-round leader Northern California GA.

Utah finished in eighth place in the two-day Morse Cup competition. Clay Bingham led Utah with scores of 74- 72. Clark Rustand shot 75-76 and Tommy Sharp shot 80- 74. The tournament continues as an individual tournament for two more days.

Jake Ellison, also representing Utah in the tournament but not on the Utah Morse Cup team, shot71-77.

Levin -- who is in the midst of a sizzling summer streak that has produced three major victories and a tie for 13th at the U.S. Open -- began his round on the 10th tee. He birdied his final three holes on the back nine, but struggled on the front, making three bogies and no birdies. Heâ€™s looking to add this title to a list that includes this yearâ€™s California Amateur, Scratch Players and Porter Cup championships.

Putnam, a Pepperdine University student, also began on the back and jump-started his round with an eagle 3 on the 13th hole. He also struggled on the shorter front nine, with two bogies and only one birdie.

Scott Gordon of Fair Oaks, CA, had the shot of a day, holing a five-iron shot for an ace on the 200-yard, par-3 second hole. His 70-70 â€“ 140 leaves him just three shots off of the lead.
