June UGA Volunteer Spotlight

By Marcus Wenger, Boatwright Intern

Each month, the UGA spotlights one of our devoted volunteers to express our deep appreciation for all they do and to help you, our loyal members, become well acquainted with them. The month of June features UGA Rules Official Rich Shew.

Rick was born in Ogden and moved to Salt Lake City when he was two. His dad was an avid golfer and was Rick’s inspiration to start playing the greatest game ever played at the young age of nine. Rick played golf in high school and attended Columbia University in New York City. After a few years, Shew decided to transfer back home to The University of Utah and finished with a masters of education.

Rick is married to Lori Shew, and together they have a daughter and a son. Like his father, Rick passed down his love of golf to his son who is now a passionate golfer with a four handicap. Unfortunately, Rick’s daughter did not catch the same interest in golf but pursued gymnastics instead.

Interestingly, Rick has been golfing for well over 50 years now but has never had a hole-in-one. On the other hand, his dad hit two holes-in-one during the same round at Oakridge Country Club. Rick’s wife, Lori, made a hole-in-one during her first round of golf ever! Rick continues to try for his first ace as he plays three times each week. His favorite golf course he has ever had the privilege of playing is Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, situated on the Pacific coast.

Rick Shew became involved with the Utah Golf Association three years ago after retiring from the Department of Veterans Affairs where he worked as an instructional designer. He wanted to get involved with UGA because he needed a new, productive way to spend his time. Rick loves being a UGA volunteer because he gets to watch great golf and form lasting relationships with the players and other volunteers.

The Utah Golf Association thanks its volunteers for sacrificing their time and energy to help the UGA fulfill its mission to promote interest in the game of golf by encouraging, organizing, supporting, sponsoring, and administering golfing activities and programs.
