The Utah Senior Amateur Championship at Logan Country Club ended with an exciting playoff between Randy Hicken and Steven Poulson. Hicken and Poulson were tied at even-par 210 after three rounds, forcing them into a sudden-death playoff on Logan CC’s par-5 No. 1, which was played as a par 4 during the three-day event.

Both started the hole in good position after hitting their drives in the fairway. Poulson hit his approach shot into the front-right bunker, while Hicken hit his second shot through the center of the green to the back rough. Hicken played first and nearly holed out his chip shot for birdie, ending up at tap-in range instead. Poulson’s bunker shot flew 12 feet past the hole, and he missed his putt for par short and right. Hicken was crowned 2016 champion after sinking his easy tap-in for par.

“I haven’t played UGA golf since 2005. I took a few years off to be more involved with my family,” explained Randy Hicken. “It’s fun getting back into competitive golf.”

Hicken posted impressively consistent rounds of 72-70-68 to catch up to Steven Poulson, who was leading the Championship Division after his first two rounds of 71 and 68.

“The greens were firm, so reading them correctly was crucial to staying near the top of the leaderboard all weekend,” stated Hicken. “Luckily, I improved a little each day and was able to cut off a couple of strokes. I am very excited about this win; it’s always exciting to win a tournament, especially when it’s a UGA championship-level event.”

Doug Marriott carded rounds of 78-74—152 to win the Super Senior Division by four strokes over runner-up Steven Brinton. Shaun Houston was the Net Division champion by one stroke over Jon Norton with rounds of 67-63—130.
