Fidel Concepcion Ties For Second at the 21st Del Walker Intercollegiate

By: Bryon Lester, Assistant Director of Strategic Communications SUU

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Thunderbird junior Fidel Concepcion finished in a tie for second at the 21st Del Walker Intercollegiate, leading the way for the team by shooting even-par over three rounds of play.

Concepcion shot a 70 on the first day, and shot 69 in the second round which was started on Monday and concluded Tuesday morning. In the third and final round he shot a 71 to bring his three-round total to 210.

This result matches Concepcion’s best finish this season, as he also finished second at the Bill Cullum Invitational in the fall.

“Obviously we’re pleased with another high finish for him, but he’s a little disappointed with his round today,” SUU head coach Richard Church said about Fidel’s effort. “He had an eagle putt on the to tie it after he hit 4-iron to about 10 feet, and he let a few get away. But he was really able to claw his way back into contention today and fight. He really fought hard on the course today and we’re proud of him for that.”

He finished in a tie with Riley Elmes from Loyola Marymount and Mason Schulze from Boise State.

Freshman Ali Hameed ended up second for the Thunderbirds, shooting 73, 75 and 76 in the three rounds of action. His total of 224 put him in a tie for 48th on the leaderboard. Fellow freshman Jake Vincent went 70, 73, 82, in the three rounds of play to finish in a tie for 51st after the final round of competition.

Christian Karren shot a combined 241 (84, 78, 79) to finish in a tie for 79th, and Bradley Collet shot a combined 263 (91, 89, 83) to finish in 84th.

Brodey Payzant played as an individual at the event, finishing in a tie for 79th after shooting 81, 81, 79, over the two days of action.

As a team the Thunderbirds finished in a tie for 13th place with UC Riverside.

Boise State won the team title by shooting 855 (+15) at the event. The top player on the leaderboard was a Bronco, as Brian Humphreys shot a one-under 209 to win the individual title.

The Thunderbirds will next be in action on March 10th when they will take part in the 2017 Jackrabbit Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada.
