Banz and Garity Each Card 74 at The Ranches to Top State Am Qualifier Leaderboard

Seventy-two Utah golfers traveled to The Ranches Golf Club in Eagle Mountain, Utah, for the chance to advance to the two-day stroke play qualifying stage of the 119th Utah State Amateur Championship at Ogden Golf & Country Club and Hubbard Golf Course at Hill Air Force Base. Like always, the competition was strong, but only 23 competitors moved on to the championship.

Hayden Banz and Sam Garity each carded rounds of 74 (+2) to climb to the top of the leaderboard as qualifying co-medalists. Banz carded even-par 36 on the front and two-over 38 on the back to claim the title. Garity experienced more of a rollercoaster round than Banz that consisted of one double, four bogeys and four birdies. Despite the challenge of the day’s ups and downs, Garity held it together well enough to make back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 and earn the victory.

Following an eight-way playoff for the final four qualifying spots and the first and second alternates, Cole Wecker, Christopher Carter, Kevin Stoddard and Ben McGregor advanced to the championship. John Shumway claimed first alternate and Mitch Call clinched second alternate.
