Siddens Wins Both UGA Mid-Am, Masters Titles in Playoff

Kirk Siddens came from four down with five to play, forced a playoff with Dan Horner, and won the UGA Mid-Am and Masters championship on the second hole of sudden death Friday at Hill Air Force Base. Horner, playing with Siddens all three rounds, led the 54-hole tournament from the first hole to the 54^th hole and then lost it on the 56^th hole.

 

Horner had a four stroke lead with just five holes to play and saw the strokes whittle away one at a time, hole-by-hole, and the two finished deadlocked at 11 under par 205. Horner’s lead began dissipating on the 14^th hole when he bogeyed. Siddens then birdied 15 and 16, and Horner bogeyed 17, with both making par on 18.

 

On the first playoff hole, a par five that Siddens eagled earlier in the day, Horner had to manage par from behind some trees to extend the match another hole, but Horner bogeyed on the second playoff hole and the match was over.

 

It was the first time that Siddens has won the UGA Mid-Am, but in 2006 he won the Masters title (40 and over).

 

It was the second year in a row that the Mid-Am champion was also the Masters Champion. Herb Lyons won both titles last year.

 

Horner started the day three shots a head of Siddens and although Siddens cut the lead to one after six, Horner got it back to three at the turn and actually widened it to four shots with a birdie on 11.

 

Darrin Overson, who started the tournament with a lost ball on the first hole of the tournament, shot three consecutive rounds under par to finish in third place, but he was seven shots behind Siddens and Horner.
