The Country Club played tough during the first round of the 114th Utah State Amateur and it looks like the qualifying score to get into match play will be the highest in at least 20 years.
Only four players beat par and the low rounds were two under par 70s shot by Devon Purser and 49-year-old Mike Jorgensen. At 71 were Christian Jensen and Cole Ogden.
Past champions Zac Blair and Dan Horner are in good shape to make match play. They each shot 74. Mason Casper, another favorite, shot 73, as did former runnerup Carl Jensen. Mike Jurca is also in good shape with an opening round 72.
If the cut came after the first day everyone at 77 and under would make it and there wouldn’t even be a playoff. Thirty-one players shot 77 and better. If there is a repeat performance the cut will come at 154 and that would exceed the recent highest cut of 153 at Park Meadows in 1993.
Former champions Darrin Overson and Gregg Oliphant each shot 81 and need a great second round to advance to match play.
Two members of The Country Club, Thomas Young and Jon Wright, opened strong with 74s.
“The Country Club is in superb condition and the greens are hard and fast, stimping at about 12.5,” said Keith Hansen, one of the rules officials helping with the tournament.
“Perhaps the hole locations were a bit too tough,” said Bill Walker, UGA Executive Director, “but it was a great test of golf today.”
With the cut likely at around 153 it keeps many players in the chase who probably thought they were out of the running.
