Gentry Hicks Tops Qualifiers at Stonebridge With 66

Gentry Hicks, an unfamiliar name in Utah golf, shot a six under par 66 to earn medalist honors in the afternoon qualifying session at Stonebridge Golf Course for the Utah State Amateur. He had seven birdies and one bogey and had an eight shot cushion to make the qualifying cut which came at 74.

David Cannon, another member of the Salt Lake Country Club, qualified for the finals to be held at The Country Club next month. He joined fellow club member Jon Wright who qualified in the morning session. Cannon shot a 67 that is normally a good enough score for medalist honors. Cannon’s 67 came with eight birdies, a bogey and a double bogey on the par three Creekside fourth hole. He shot 31 on the Sunrise nine. He will not only be carrying the banner for the Country Club, but also for the seniors. He is 62 years old and has never made match play in the State Am.

Hicks is a newcomer to Utah and played on the University of Utah golf team this spring. He hails from Tucson, Arizona where he won the Arizona high school Class 4A medalist honors. He’s planning to play for the Utes for three more years and then hopefully ‘play or teach golf for a living.’ The 66 at Stonebridge is his personal best score.

“I made four or five 15 footers and that can turn an ordinary round into a special round,” he said. “I’m looking forward to playing in other UGA events and plan to stay here for the summer.”

Thirteen players shot 74 or better and advanced to the Big Dance. The cut came evenly without any ties, and Rich Tripp was the only 75 on the scoreboard and so he is the first alternate. Shane Romano won a scorecard playoff to be the second alternate.
