First Wave of Qualifiers at Stonebridge Advance to Utah State Amateur Championship

The first wave of ten waves of qualifiers to advance to the Utah State Amateur reached shore at the Stonebridge Golf Course early this afternoon and the second wave will reach shore at Stonebridge early this evening. Another eight qualifying sessions will be held in the next two weeks to determine the field for the 114^th Utah State Amateur to be held at The Country Club.

 

The morning session had 85 players and 13 qualifiers with Ryan Brimley, Mason Casper, and Michael Coopman sharing medalist honors with a score of three under par 69 on the Sunrise/Creekside courses. Jon Wright, a member of the Salt Lake Country Club and site of the finals, earned a spot in the finals with a 70. Troy Parsons also shot 70.

 

Even par was the score it took to qualify without a playoff and those who shot one over par 73 had to undergo a five-way playoff for the final two spots. Survivors were Kenny You and Rigo Jimenez as they each birdied the second playoff hole. The playoff continued to determine alternate spots and Greg Buckway won the first alternate spot and Mike Behle won the second alternate position. Buckway has a sterling State Am record and must rely on getting into the tournament as an alternate.  Other prominent golfers who failed to advance included Lance Richards and Paul Winterowd.
