Roy Christensen conquered the thick rough and slick greens to win the 2010 Lanny Nielsen Utah Senior Open Thursday at the Toana Vista Golf Course in Wendover with back-to-back rounds of 69. He finished a comfortable four shots ahead Jeff Green and five shots ahead of Brad Stone, the only other players to break par for the two days.
Jimmy Blair, a three-time winner of this tournament, shot a 68 for the opening round lead, but he fell off the second day with a 76 and finished in fourth place at even par.
Mike Borich, the two-time defending champion, shot rounds of 71-76-147 and finished in sixth place.
In the Super Senior Divisions, 65 and over, Bob Rudd won the professional side with scores of 71-71-142 and Al Simkins won the amateur side with scores of 74-76-150.
Bill Probst was the low amateur with a one over par 145 with rounds of 71-74. In the seven year history of the tournament an amateur has never finished within six shots of the winning professional score and that held true against this year. Probst edged Mike Hacker by one shot. Hacker had the first round lead with a 69, but shot a second day 77.
The tournament was named in honor of Lanny Nielsen, former head professional at Wasatch and Jeremy and now affiliated with TruGolf in the electronic games and golf simulator machines. He was honored at the tournament banquet and in his remarks expressed gratitude for the many friends and fellow professionals who have helped him throughout his golf career.
The Toana Vista golf course was in excellent condition and the greens were as good as greens can be. The recovery of the golf course to outstanding condition has been a remarkable turnaround. Just two years ago the course was nearly lost, but the grounds crew has done wonders in restoring it to top flight playing conditions.
